Manuela Meier's research in the field of audification of earthquake data was first conducted in 2007-08 at the Institute for Electronic Music and Acoustics of the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, Austria (Institut für Elektronische Musik und Akustik der Kunstuniversität Graz – IEM, in collaboration with Anna Saranti.
The ongoing project seeks to explore the potential of sonification of scientific data (and in this case audification in particular) in order to improve the prediction of earthquakes, focusing on the aural perception and recognition of aural patterns within seismometer recordings.
The subsequent artistic output – the multi-channel electroacoustic composition underground sounds (2007) – has also been discussed and published in the Proceedings of the ICMC International Computer Music Conference (ICMC) 2008, and was presented at the International Conference on Auditory Display (ICAD) 2008 and the Linux Audio Conference (LAC) 2008, and performed at the festivals and concerts listed below.
Manuela Meier's piece refract.ed (2009) focuses even more on the sonic detail of the audified data of earthquakes. refract.ed is one of her most performed pieces to date, and has been discussed in lectures and been performed throughout Europe, Australia, Mexico and the US.
